1892 - 1893 Columbian Exposition Medal Christopher Columbus Gilt Bronze Eglit 55

145.00

Commemorative Medal struck for the 1892 - 1893 Columbian Exposition and Worlds fair, held in Chicago.  It has been struck in Bronze with a Gilt finish and is 2" (50 mm) in diameter.  The reference is Eglit 55.

The obverse is a portrait of Christopher Columbus, holding an unfurled map.

The reverse is two female figures.  One is seated, holding the shield of the United States.  The second is pointing towards a scene of the exposition grounds, with the sun rising over Lake Michigan, in the background.

There is a touch of rubbing wear at the highest points of the design.  There are some fine hairline scratches in the fields of the obverse and a small furrow at about the 7 o'clock position on the reverse.  The original Gilt finish is largely intact, but has faded in some areas, creating a lovely contrasting effect among the design elements.
